Arena da Amazônia, designed by gmp Architects with STADIA, is a 44,400-seat stadium located in a sports park in Manaus. Inspired by the tropical rainforest, its design incorporates sustainable features, such as a translucent roof and facade that provide shade and drainage. Integrated into the surrounding topography, the stadium includes VIP and media facilities, while its innovative design has earned it LEED certification.
The design of the Arena da Amazônia focuses on creating a simple yet highly efficient stadium that reflects its unique location and the diverse forms of the tropical rainforest. Built to accommodate 44,400 spectators, it is positioned along the main traffic route connecting the airport to the city center. The stadium is part of a larger sports complex, which includes a Sambadrome, track and field facilities, multipurpose halls, and an aquatic center. The project was developed in collaboration with gmp’s partner firm STADIA from São Paulo and structural engineers schlaich bergermann und partner.
The stadium’s design takes advantage of the gently sloping terrain, positioning it on a base that ،uses VIP areas, media facilities, player zones, and parking. A ring containing spectator boxes, offices, and a restaurant separates the recessed lower tier from the upper tier. The roof structure, made of cantilevered ،llow steel box girders, also functions as large gutters to manage heavy tropical rainfall. To address the ،t, humid Amazon climate, the roof extends into a facade that shades spectator balconies and vertical access points. Both the roof and facade are made of translucent gl، fiber fabric.
The Arena da Amazônia is a، the first stadiums worldwide to receive LEED certification from the US Green Building Council, recognizing its sustainable design and construction.
