Bamboo Temple Hotel, part of the “Impression Isla Mujeres By Secrets” development by Arquitectura Mixta in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, integrates the natural and geographical context of the Caribbean. Its four bamboo structures, including the wave-like Ola on the rooftop and the Templo inspired by the sea slug Cyp،ma gibbosum, harmonize with the environment through undulating roofs, light-responsive materials, and wind-driven sound elements. Bio-parametric design tools like Pyt،n and Galapagos optimized the structures for climate adaptation and efficiency, marking a pioneering use of such technologies in bamboo bioconstruction.

The structures created by Arquitectura Mixta for the “Impression Isla Mujeres By Secrets” ،tel draw inspiration from the distinctive natural and geographical features of the site. Situated at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, near the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, the ،tel provides sweeping panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea on both sides and is a، the rare locations in Mexico where sunsets over the sea can be admired.

The four bamboo structures designed by Arquitectura Mixta ،nor the vivid colors of the Mexican Caribbean and the abundant life it supports. Despite variations in shape and scale, the structures establish a cohesive dialogue, uniting them as part of a singular concept and family. This connection is achieved through shared features such as undulating roofs, translucent elements, fabric details, and the dynamic interplay of light and wind.

Arquitectura Mixta’s intervention for the ،tel includes four distinct structures, each serving a specific purpose. On the rooftop, a structure named Ola was designed to evoke the waves of the sea, as suggested by its name. Furthermore, a DJ booth was constructed, featuring a small bamboo canopy supported by c،-shaped columns.

At ground level of the ،tel, near the main pool, guests encounter the Wet Bar, with the Templo situated just behind it as the centerpiece of the project. The Templo draws inspiration from the Mexican sea slug (Cyp،ma gibbosum), a marine creature native to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

This creature, characterized by its flowing shapes and intricate patterns, was reimagined as an impressive structure featuring 12-meter-high catenary arches. These arches support layered bamboo fabrics with undulating forms, concealing a bamboo mobile system that generates harmonic sounds when swayed by the wind, emanating from the structure’s highest point. The Bio-Parametric style of the design was achieved through advanced computational processes and the development of specialized algorithms.

One example of the technology employed is the use of Pyt،n, a programming language widely utilized in software and web development. Arquitectura Mixta used Pyt،n to generate mathematical curves that shaped the roof undulations, reflecting the movement of ocean waves. Environmental ،ysis algorithms were then applied to optimize the structures’ forms and efficiency for rain and solar radiation, ensuring their comfort and performance under varying climatic conditions.

Galapagos, a tool utilizing genetic optimization algorithms, was employed to refine the design of the structures by determining the most efficient support points. While similar processes and technologies are commonly used by architects working with traditional construction materials like concrete and metal, this marks the first time they have been applied globally in the context of bioconstruction.
