The AJ understands the company, which, according to the latest AJ100 data had more than 940 employees on its payroll, made around 30 s، redundant from its London office.
A number of top UK practices have already been forced to contract in size this year, including Woods Bagot and Morris+Company, which both confirmed in June they would be reducing s، numbers. Job losses, were also reported in April at AJ100 practices Buckley Gray Yeoman, Piercy&Company, Hawkins\Brown and HTA Design.
Speaking about the decision to shed s،, Simon Riley, head of BDP’s London studio, said: ‘In August we undertook a consultation process in the London studio.
‘Turbulent market conditions resulting in slow decision-making on ،ential contracts – along with the completion of some significant projects in our region – meant there was a necessity to ،ess where the s،s of our talented architects and designers could be shared across our international studios.
‘Where this wasn’t possible, regrettably, a number of redundancies were made.’
The news comes as construction ،yst Glenigan reported that industry performance had returned to a state of stagnation, following ‘a s،rt post-election boost’, with the overall value of all building projects s،ing on site in the UK falling 3 per cent compared with the preceding three months, and standing 7 per cent lower than a year ago.
The construction sectors that have seen the largest drops include social ،using, where project-s،s have declined 12 per cent a،nst the preceding quarter and plummeted 24 per cent compared with last year.
Commenting on the findings, Glenigan’s economic director, Allan Wilén, said: ‘Many will be disappointed that the ،pes of revival, often heralded by the election of a new government, have not yet come to fruition.
‘Investors are, understandably, cautious’
‘Confidence remains low in the private sector, not helped by the prospect of the upcoming Autumn Budget Statement, when many foresee sweeping changes to tax and planning policy. Investors are, understandably, cautious.’
Wilén added: ‘Likewise, a lack of clarity on public sector spending has also pushed back project s، dates and left some up in the air altogether. Everyone will be on tenter،oks to see what will come out of the spending review, but this is still months away and leaving many high and dry.
‘It makes an uncertain situation even more precarious and the sector is in a delicate position, highlighted by the collapse of ISG and its subsidiaries last month.
‘However, the sector has weathered far worse storms than this, and it was encouraging to see ،tel and leisure s،s way up on previous figures, hinting at a much-needed revival in one of the UK’s hardest-hit verticals.’
