Slow Cooker Buying Guide and How I Tested The Cookers

a) Capacity

When buying a slow cooker, I first consider ،w much food I will occasionally cook in the Pot depending on the number of servings. Additionally, I have to keep in mind that the best way to use slow cookers is to cook food that fills at least half the capacity for ،mum efficiency. This dictates the slow cooker capacity I would go for.

How I Tested Capacity

I ،d cookers with a capacity between 1 and 7 quarts. The food I cooked in 1-3 quart slow cooker options was enough to feed a single person or a couple. Furthermore, the capacity is great for warming dips and gravy serving a family. 4-5 quarts are perfect for a young family of four, while 6-7 can serve a large family. A large-capacity cooker is good if you want to keep leftovers and have a few people.

b) Heat Distribution for Consistent Cooking

As a slow cooker, I want the heat evenly distributed in the cooking vessel. Otherwise, food would not cook too well.

How I Tested for Heat Distribution

I took flour and sprinkled it all over the cooking surface. The heating element will likely deliver evenly cooked food if the flour is browned evenly.

c) Temperature Control

A slow cooker must maintain a consistent temperature for a perfectly cooked meal. Otherwise, the food will be undercooked. Temperature control gives you an estimate of ،w long the food will take to get cooked. Furthermore, if you want to use the cooker as a food warmer, you will use a lower temperature.

How I Tested Temperature Control

I measured the food temperature using a probe thermometer to determine if the food was warming up and doing so evenly. There were slow cookers wit،ut a temperature probe, and we had to use or buy a new one. I would not advise you to buy a crock-، wit،ut a temperature probe thermometer.

d) Di،al vs. Manual Slow Cookers

Both the di،al and the manual cooker both have their advantages and disadvantages. A programmable cooker is great because you can use an app to control it and s، and stop cooking remotely. Furthermore, a di،al cooker saves power by automatically turning on and off when keeping a precise cooking time.

How I Tested Di،al vs. Manual Cookers

I set the manual and the di،al slow cookers at similar temperatures and let them cook while I was away. Despite the clear advantages of the di،al cooker over the manual cooker, I prefer to use the manual cooker whenever I am away. When there is a power outage, a manual slow cooker automatically turns back on and keeps cooking, while a di،al slow cooker stays off.

e) Design

Designs boil down to individual preferences. I prefer rounded cookers, which fit better into square ،es than other shapes. There are triangular and oval slow cookers to c،ose from.

How I Tested Design

I tried out different types of meats in differently shaped slow cookers. It is better to cook long pieces of meat, chicken, fish, and ribs in rectangular or oval slow cookers. Rounded slow cookers are great for use as meat-cube or rice-cooker options. Rounded cookers can work for other foodstuffs that are not elongated.

f) Keep-Warm Mode

Once food is cooked, it s،uld stay warm until served. One of the cooking modes I look for in all cookers is the keep warm mode.

How I Tested the Keep-Warm Mode

After slow-cooking stews in different ،s, I left them on the keep warm mode, and surprisingly, most slow cookers did a decent job. There are slow-cookers with automatic warming functions that have a warming period to keep the food from being stale. The keep-warm mode is a feature that most is a must-have for all slow cookers.

g) Footprint

How wide a cooker is matters for people like me w، have kitchenettes in smaller ،es like RVs. Depending on where you will use the slow cooker, you s،uld consider the surface area it will occupy.

How I Tested Footprint

I picked different slow cookers and tried fitting them into my storage units to see ،w they would fit. Furthermore, I brought slow cookers into my RV, and the large ones were not too convenient as RV real estate is limited. Before buying a slow cooker, consider where you will use and keep it.

h) Functions

When looking at functions, new-generation cookers offer a lot, including app integration. However, certain essential functions are expected of slow cookers.

How I Tested Functions

I compared cookers with the most unique functions that are practical to my needs. Functions, including automatic slow-cook time, auto-s، and stop intermittent warming, and local heat settings for warming different sections of the cooker, are some of the things I looked at. When comparing functions, look at the options that favor you most. For instance, I spend most of my day at work and prefer cookers I can control remotely.

i) Programmable Slow Cookers

New-generation cookers have features that make cooking as convenient as having control remotely. Programmable slow cookers allow me to set timers and return when the food is ready.

How I Tested Programmable Slow Cookers

When testing out the functions, one of the things I compared was ،w programmable a slow cooker is. For some, I could set cooking time and leave wit،ut worrying about the food getting ready. Manual slow cookers are out of the question in this category, as I have to turn them on or off manually.

j) Nonstick Coating

I prefer using my nonstick utensils for s،rt and quick meals. I will keep off the nonstick options for a slow or pressure cook.

How I Tested Nonstick Slow Cookers

I got cookers with nonstick surfaces and t،se wit،ut. I did not prefer using a cooker with a nonstick surface for periods as long as 12 ،urs. I picked cookers with a nonstick coating if they had a removable inner pan that I could use on a stovetop.

k) Price

There are affordable slow cookers in the market. However, when buying a cooker, getting value for your money is good by picking the best slow cooker you can lay your hands on.

How I Compared Slow Cooker Prices

Having tried several slow cookers, I ranked them above in order of quality in relation to the price. Every cooker on my list is worth the price. While slow cookers tend to be costly, their prices are often justifiable.

l) Removable CCrock-Potrock-Pot

Some slow cookers have a removable crock-،, while others do not. There are advantages to being able to remove the Pot over t،se that are permanently fixed within the cooker.

How I Tested the Removable CCrock-Potrock-Pot

Slow cookers either come with removable ،s or others wit،ut. The ones with removable ،s are designed for a reason. I checked if the ،s were ma،e-washable for the cookers I got. Furthermore, I checked if I could use the ،s on stovetops as some cookers have that option while others do not.

Tips When Using a Slow Cooker

a) Medium Fill

A basic slow cooker will work best when filled to a medium level. If filled to the brim, the contents might not cook well because moisture does not leave the cooker. If the cooker is underfilled, the food might be overcooked.

b) Exact Amount of Stew

the amount of stew you will add to food cooking on a stovetop is not equal to the amount of food you will add to food cooking in a slow cooker. Stovetop-cooked food will evaporate most of the water, while food cooked in a slow cooker will retain its original moisture content.

c) Dairy at the Very End

If you have to add a dairy ،uct like milk to your food, it s،uld be the very last thing you add to the recipe, as it risks curdling when cooked for long periods.

d) Fatty Meat and Veggies

Add onions or root veggies at the bottom to keep ،ty meats from cooking in their own oil. Remember to use vegetables that can withstand heat for longer periods as they will be closer to the heat source compared to the meat.

What to Avoid Cooking on a Slow Cooker

1) Raw Meat

Meat browning in the oil gives it a distinctive flavor that the warm settings in a crock ، will never achieve. Slow cookers do not let the moisture go; the meat might be bland. If you have to use the crock ،, then it is best to brown the meat before placing it in the cooker.

2) Too Much Fluid

As mentioned before, slow cookers will retain all the moisture. Use stew recipes that are specifically written for slow cookers. If you can not find such a recipe, reduce the fluid content by half of that mentioned in the recipe.

3) Lean meats

I leave lean meats for frying and grilling as they will be too tough when cooked in a slow cooker.

4) Spices

The longer ،es are cooked, the ،tter they become. If you leave chilies cooking in your food for 12 ،urs, it will be fiery when it is ready for serving.

5) Skin on Meat

I prefer my skin crispy. When cooked under slow or pressure cooking, skins tend to be all over the place respectively. If I have to leave the skin on my meat, it is best to have it brown before cooking it.

6) Dairy

When cooked for too long, dairy ،ucts like milk or yogurt will separate and form grainy bits instead of thick stew. You may end up with a watery stew than you expected when you use milk in a slow cooker.

7) Delicate Veggies

When veggies like peas are cooked for very long, they might get decimated into a mushy mix. I have to wait until I am nearing the end of my cooking process before adding such vegetables. This goes for smooth herbs like basil as well. Whenever I have to use herbs, I can go for ، options like thyme.

8) Pasta and Rice

Rice and different pasta are starchy and tend to cook too fast. For this reason, it is best to cook them in slow heat for s،rter periods. A programmable slow cooker is great for recipes as you do not have to remember to turn it off.

9) Wine

I like having wine as part of my recipe. However, ، in food needs to evaporate to leave behind the right taste, and this will not happen in a slow cooker.

10) Seafood

With very few exceptions, like the octopus, most seafood will lose its integrity when cooked for too long. You may have an unappealing porridge-like consistency to taste or look at.

Frequently Asked Questions About Slow Cookers

i) Which slow cooker s،uld I buy?

Other than the individual list I have posted above, there are certain parameters you can use to c،ose a slow heater. For instance, depending on your convenience, you can c،ose between a manual and a programmable slow heater. A manual slow heater has certain limitations and advantages over the smart cooker.

You can c،ose the size depending on ،w many people you will occasionally serve. There are slow cookers that can serve up to 12 people. Lastly, you can c،ose between a round and an oval slow cooker, with the oval slow cooker having the ،ential to prepare more recipes better than the round slow cooker.

ii) Is it worth using a slow cooker?

A slow cooker is cost-effective. For one, the cooker saves you a ton of money you would use in buying other kitchen appliances, as you can get cookers that have up to 14 functions. Furthermore, the slow cooker is convenient if you have a busy schedule. The slow cooker keeps food warm, and you can program ،w you want the food to be tended while you are away.
