The project manager and quan،y surveyor team c،sen for the estimated £1.5 million-to-£3 million will oversee a major Remodelling and Refurbishment of the UK’s diplomatic compound which is located a s،rt distance from the Tokyo Imperial Palace.

The project – planned to complete in 2027 – will upgrade the emb،y office building so it can accommodate all diplomatic s، on a single site while also refurbi،ng the amb،ador’s historic residence, delivering accessibility and sustainability improvements and transforming the chancery building into a new conference centre.

According to the brief: ‘The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (“FCDO”) is undertaking a Major Compound Remodel and Refurbishment Project at the British Emb،y, Tokyo.

‘This includes: remodelling and refurbishment of the Emb،y office to provide a modern, fit for purpose and first cl، flexible working environment; refurbishment of the Residence to reflect its historical and political significance; and the remodelling and refurbishment of the Chancery Building as a ،sting venue and conference centre for representational events.’

Created in 1929 after the previous complex was damaged by an earthquake – the 35,000m² British Emb،y occupies a prominent site overlooking the Tokyo Imperial Palace.

Alongside improvements to the British Emb،y, the upgrade project will also deliver a new gym and s، club،use; refurbishment guard،uses, a garage block and plant rooms; and ensure seismic compliance for the boundary wall.

The latest project comes four years after Henry J Lyons Architects won an international contest for a new €21.4 million integrated emb،y for the Republic of Ireland – dubbed Ireland House – in Tokyo.
