HTA Design reveals proposals for Queen Elizabeth II memorial garden
The AJ100 practice’s proposals for a 0.8ha slice of Regent’s Park were granted consent by Westminster City Council in June. Tate + Co worked on architectural features.
HTA’s proposals include new landscaping and the creation of a tranquil ،e, which it says will deliver significant benefits to nature, including plant species significant to Queen Elizabeth’s life.
Hedges, a meadow and a new pond will feature alongside planting that will attract wildlife, HTA said, adding that the planting would be adaptable to the UK’s changing climate.
Several structures are proposed for the garden, including a pergola and an accessible viewing platform created from a disused water tower.
The Royal Parks charity, which manages eight of London’s parks, is aiming to reuse concrete, brick and steelwork from the demolition of a former plant nursery on the site, which was decommissioned in 2018.
HTA ،ociate senior landscape architect Katharina Erne said: ‘The design transforms a brownfield site into a stunning, biodiverse and climate resilient garden for the public to enjoy for many years to come
‘The consultation response was overwhelmingly positive, with strong enthusiasm for the design, particularly its sustainable et،s.’
Royal Parks chief executive Andrew Scattergood said: 'The approval of planning permission marks an exciting step forward in the creation of the new garden, which is designed to be a tranquil ،e for reflection, accessible to all. It provides a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. This site will add two acres of biodiverse par،d for everyone to enjoy and explore'
The Royal Parks announced HTA’s appointment in December ahead of a five week-long public consultation on the designs.
Work is now underway and the park is due to open in 2026 to coincide with what would have been the Queen’s 100th birthday.
