The practice says its proposals for 60 Queen Victoria Street, which were approved this month through delegated powers, will largely retain the patinated bronze exterior of the 1990s landmark office block.
Sheppard Robson’s scheme for developer DWS includes upgrades to the interior of the 25-year-old building to improve environmental performance, while reconfiguring the ba،t, ground floor and upper floors to introduce terraces.
A rooftop pavilion will also be added to the building, which will see terraces on every floor facing Pancras Lane and a reconfigured ground floor with co-working ،e. The ba،t car park will meanwhile be replaced by cycling ‘end of journey’ facilities.
Upper floorplates will be enlarged by the removal of the northern core and remodelling of the central core, Sheppard Robson says.
The architects said they were aiming for BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 4.5* ratings by adding high-performance glazing and an all-electric MEP, as well as by increasing biodiversity on the site.
Controversially, brise-soleil screens on the windows will be removed under the consented plans in order to increase the amount of natural light that comes into the building.
Campaign group The Twentieth Century Society (c20) objected to the removal of the brise-soleil, calling the feature ‘an integral part of the original design, contributing to the depth and richness of the building’s elevations’.
C20 added: ‘While 60 Queen Victoria Street is not listed, no doubt on account of its young age, it is clearly a building of historic and architectural significance and s،uld be recognised as a Non-Designated Heritage Asset (NDHA). It is our view that it is one of the most important post-war buildings in the City of London.’
David Ardill, a partner at Sheppard Robson, said: ‘We treated the idiosyncratic building – which has many enduring qualities – with a great deal of respect, retaining the spirit of the original building while upgrading its performance and tuning the building to ensure it appeals to the demands of the modern tenant.’
