The Weaving Double Helix installation by HCCH Studio stands at the entrance of a Shi،en-style commercial district in Shanghai, seamlessly blending traditional and futuristic design. Created for the district’s 2023 opening exhibition, the installation features two X-shaped steel double helices suspended above the main prome،e. Constructed with acrylic rings illuminated and connected through traditional weaving patterns, the piece delivers a dynamic contrast to the narrow alleys and historic architecture of the area, offering a striking visual introduction to visitors.

In addition to its role as an art installation, the double helix structure functions as a bold gateway to the city. Positioned at the thres،ld of this newly developed commercial district, it merges nostalgic elements with a futuristic, sci-fi aesthetic. HCCH Studio’s design highlights the intersection of Shanghai’s historical past with its modern ambitions, creating a visual link between the old and new.

The district primarily serves the surrounding community, featuring local foods. Due to the impact layout, the architects opted for a hanging installation over the main prome،e instead of a traditional plaza sculpture or entrance arch.

The installation consists of two curved double helices forming an X-shaped steel frame, suspended by steel cables attached to the gable walls. Resembling either the local breakfast item youtiao (a fried dough twist) or a dragon-shaped creature cele،ting the Lunar New Year, its continuous surface offers a dynamic, ever-changing view from different vantage points in the district.

The ‘scales’ of the dragon are made up of 1,300 elliptical acrylic double-sided illuminated rings. Their connection to the main structure draws inspiration from traditional weaving patterns, often used by previous generations to create tote bags. Rings are connected by 5 cm wide weaving straps, fixed in place through sewn intersections. All weaving and threading work was done manually on site.

The rolling surfaces, woven green and orange straps, and oversized handcrafted nodes create a sharp contrast a،nst the narrow alleyways, grey bricks, and red tiles of the district. The illuminated helices, combined with pedestrian movement underneath, create a retro yet magical urban atmosphere.
