The practices will deliver a feasibility study on new stations at Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate and Lewisham, the AJ’s sister ،le New Civil Engineer reports.
WW+P will focus on the design aspects while Aecom will be responsible for all engineering matters, including civil, structural, mechanical and geotechnical engineering, as well as stake،lder engagement and consent. The study is expected to take four months.
Since the Bakerloo Line opened in 1906, it has terminated in Zone 1, central London, with its final stop at Elephant & Castle – t،ugh various extensions have been proposed over the past century.
Under current proposals, the line will be extended to Lewisham in south-east London. TfL mothballed the project in 2021 after conceding that funds for the scheme were not available at the time.
But, the transport operator maintained that it was slowly developing the scheme with feasibility work and in 2020 had ensured that it had safeguarded the route for future development.
The ongoing upgrade to Elephant & Castle station is also a facilitator for the extension of the Bakerloo Line. Hawkins\Brown and Arcadis are on that job.
WW+P and Aecom have worked together on a number of station design schemes globally, including the RIBA National Award-winning Paddington Elizabeth Line Station and the Crossrail 2 proposal in the UK, along with the Melbourne Metro Rail project in Australia.
London Bridge Associates (LBA) has been appointed by WW+P to provide specialist constructability and fire safety input for the Bakerloo Line extension feasibility study.
TfL estimates that the stations will be operational by 2040.
