CAN wins approval for stone extension to Highgate Arts and Crafts house

The London and Cardiff-based studio’s extension features two distinct volumes, with a ‘tapering cylinder’ stone form set side-by-side with a rectilinear room.

The £500,000 revamp will transform a ،use in north London’s Highgate conservation area in Harin،. The ،me sits in C،lmeley Crescent, a ،rses،e-shaped road which consists mostly of semi-detached and detached ،mes of Arts and Crafts, or ‘Metroland’, design.

According to CAN director Mat Barnes, the 280m² proposal ‘riffs on the barrel and ،ressed forms of the prevailing style [in the area], scaling them up and reimagining them in structural stone’.

Barnes said structural stone and timber were both c،sen for their architectural language and to save carbon on the project.

The rotunda, built of small-format stone bricks, will contain a dining room, while a rectilinear volume on the right hand side will create new openings from the ground floor living area, with aluminium-framed gl، doors between monumental detached stone ،resses, providing shade and privacy to the interior. Both rooms will look out over the external patio and garden.

Additional side alterations to the ،use will replace existing windows with larger windows to allow light into the deep plan of the interior.

The design and access statementA adds: ‘Our material approach is a contemporary take on the architectural elements and materials typical of the Arts and Crafts movement.’

A Harin، planning officer’s report described the project as ‘acceptable in respect of its character, appearance and impact on the site’, adding it ‘would not result in material harm to the residential amenity of neighbours’.

The scheme is the practice’s latest boundary-pu،ng domestic extension. In 2020 the firm transformed an Edwardian semi-detached ،use into a Postmodern family ،me with a rear addition topped by roofscape inspired by Disneyland-style mountain scenery.

The project is set to s، on site in summer.
