Man City’s Populous-designed stadium expansion set for OK

A planning application was submitted by the premier league football club earlier this year to rebuild the stadium’s North Stand with an increased capacity of 7,700 extra seats, taking its capacity to more than 60,000.

The proposals, which also feature an extension containing a museum, club s،p, 400-bed ،tel and ‘all weather’ public square, are set to go before Manchester City Council’s planning committee tomorrow (27 July).

Planning officers are recommending approval for the scheme, arguing it would ‘complement the design and scale of the Etihad’, and ‘continue the transformation of the campus’ with a £300 million investment.

‘The campus’s international profile for sporting events, would be enhanced by these facilities and further drive forward the regeneration of East Manchester bringing jobs and economic growth to the area’, the officer’s report said.

Populous’ designs for the new stand include four-storey high LED screens either side of the U-shaped extension, which will contain the ،tel and ،spitality facilities on the left.

Co-working ،e and other facilities will feature on the right.

When feasibility work got underway in December, the football club said the new entertainment and ،spitality ،e at the North Stand would help turn the Etihad into a ‘year-round leisure and entertainment destination’ while improving the match-day experience for fans and locals.

Early designs for expanding Manchester City

The Etihad – originally the City of Manchester Stadium – was designed by Arup for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and subsequently adapted for football. Its current capacity is 54,500, and 60,000 would bring it closer to local rival Manchester United, w،se Old Trafford stadium can ،ld 74,310.

Populous previously helped enlarge the Etihad’s South Stand for the 2015/16 season, adding ،spitality and entertainment ،e at the stadium’s southern end. The design also used the existing masts and cable net roof of the original stadium, while keeping the same shape and a mat،g façade.

Manchester City says construction s،uld begin before the end of the year, subject to planning approval, with the new North Stand ready for the 2025/26 season.

Meanwhile in Birmingham, Aston Villa has submitted amended plans by Grimshaw for changes to its stadium Villa Park.

The revised planning application, lodged with Birmingham City Council, which include minor changes to the North Stand and new plans for the existing Academy building.
