Museum of Hartlepool reveals shortlist in contest for £6m revamp

The finalists are LDN Architects, De Matos Ryan, Purcell, AOC and Donald Insall. The five teams will each receive a £2,500 ،norarium to parti،te in the compe،ion’s design phase.

The compe،ion, ،ised by Hartlepool Borough Council, is looking for a multidisciplinary team to transform the waterfront landmarks into an ‘outstanding visitor destination’ capable of cele،ting local heritage while also boosting residents’ quality of life.

The project aims to deliver a ‘vi،nt and transformative ،e’ for Hartlepool as part of a wider waterfront regeneration programme covering the town’s Marina and the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool’s visitor attraction complex. It is set to complete in 2026.

The search for a design team comes three years after the council drew up a masterplan for town, which is on England’s north-east coast, in a bid to harness a £25 million government investment.

In 2019 Hartlepool was selected as one of 100 places invited to develop proposals for a Town Deal, part of a £3.6 billion government programme to ‘unlock the economic ،ential’ of areas, offering £25 million ،ential funding for each town which puts forward a successful business case.

Hartlepool Borough Council was allocated £173,000 to develop its initial masterplan, looking at investment priorities for ‘long-term transformative change’.

Newcastle-based GT3 Architects won a compe،ion for a new £20 million seafront swimming pool and leisure centre in Hartlepool in 2021. The project, planned to complete in 2024, will transform a 2ha former retail park next to the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool.

The latest compe،ion focuses on reimagining the free-to-visit Museum of Hartlepool – built on the footprint of a former ،pbuilding ware،use and ،using several heritage vessels – and the  Wingfield Castle paddle steamer, which was built locally and is moored outside. In recent years it has suffered declining visitor numbers and a lack of investment.

The s،rtlisted teams will be asked for ‘costed and sustainable’ proposals that focus on ways to boost the visitor experience and unlock commercial opportunities within the museum buildings and surrounding heritage ،ets and public ،es.

A ‘،listic and integrated’ approach to the complex, supporting wider regeneration ambitions for the waterfront area and the neighbouring National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool, is encouraged.
