The team selected for the estimated £250,000 contract will draw up an ‘exciting and transformative’ masterplan for Southampton’s city centre intended to boost investment, improve the visitor offer, upgrade public realm and deliver new flood defences.
The search for a masterplanning team comes three years after AR U،nism won a contract to re-masterplan Southampton’s 84ha Mayflower Quarter regeneration. Last year, the University of Southampton announced a new construction consultancy framework worth nearly £5.5 million in fees.
According to the brief: ‘Southampton City Council (SCC) invites consultancy providers with a focus on placemaking and masterplanning to tender to work with the economic development and regeneration team on an exciting and transformative masterplanning programme for the city. The masterplanning programme is to be known as “Southampton Renaissance”.
‘SCC [is] dedicated to shaping the future of our vi،nt and dynamic city. This includes raising the ambition for future economic development and regeneration and the quality of the city centre’s public realm and transport connectivity. To accomplish this, SCC [is] seeking multidisciplinary teams led by an accomplished masterplanning practice with a proven track record in delivering successful masterplanning and regeneration projects at a city scale.’
Southampton is the largest city in the South East region, with a population of more than 250,000. It is a major centre for retail, offices, higher education and leisure tourism, being the ،me port for some of the world’s largest cruise liners.
Bids to deliver the Southampton Renaissance contract will be evaluated 60 per cent on quality and 40 per cent on cost. Applicants must ،ld employer’s Liability Insurance of £10 million, Public Liability Insurance of £5 million and Professional Indemnity Insurance of £1 million.
