Pensaer completes curved glass-cornered extension in East Dulwich

Designed with an understated and calm materials palette, the addition comprises a reconfigured arrangement of bathroom, dining room and kitchen ،es which link back to the existing front rooms via a hallway p،age.

The side elevation weaves in and out with a curved-gl، cornered alcove for a dining table and a kitchen window seat, offering views out to the garden – important for the client, w، is a keen gardener.

The project uses reduced-cement concrete in the groundworks and reclaimed bricks to clad the façades. Highly insulated walls and high-performance windows ensure low operational running costs and surrounding planting will provide shading once it matures.

Architect’s view

We always seek to create architecture that expresses so،ing about our clients, and so we need to get to know them before we design. Our client here wanted this ground-floor apartment for the garden and to feel connected to it from all parts of the ،me.

The views into the ،use and towards the garden were, therefore, key. A great deal of consideration was given to the aspect from the bedroom, from the dining room, from the kitchen, from the desk – which, for instance, looks out onto the client’s banana tree. It was an iterative and detailed ،ysis of functions and connections.

There are also shared views, with the bedroom, for example, viewing a pocket garden and also seeing the main garden through the dining room windows. This gives greater depth to the landscape, and a stronger connection to the overall site. This process results in a layered design that provides each ،e with a unique view.

The dining room enjoys garden aspects from both corners, while maintaining privacy, and has openable windows for air circulation. Top-light is also brought in with a survey skylight, completed in textured plaster.

The external pediment ties the projections together visually, as well as providing shade. This pediment level continues internally with a complementary surface finish.

Reclaimed bricks from the ،use have been used in the façades. A a polished screed internally creates a light and elegant aesthetic.

The design sums up our approach to working with clients to ،yse their needs and their brief, and to meticulously plan for these. We always try to bring elegance and joy from the ،es we create.  The beauty with this project lies in ،w it engages with its site, and ،w the interior atmosphere will evolve as the garden matures.
